June dance (14th) welcomed anothr large gathering 45-50 dancers onto the floor, showing plenty of energy and excitement for a trip to Cuba, (Cuban motion that is). MERENGE taught by Robert Alexander.....You had to be there to see how cleverly he taught how to count to eight (8) in hardly no time. Just remarkable! However, you were expected to shift weight from side to side, move side to side, back, forward, rock step and other patterns while at the same time keeping track of your partner and to the beat of the music. Robert you are amazing! Thirty (30)minutes of Merenge and you "nailed it"! You created a "party like" atmosphere, causing "laughter" all over the place and very frequently.
At 6:30pm we all made a trip to Mexico....Salsa.....a little faster pace. Robert taught simple technique for the beginner, but had some refined patterns and steps for the experienced dancer.
By this time the group had grown to over 50, with several people "just watching".
Great job, Robert, rotating partners and keeping this large group will organized.
Social dancing "kicked in" at 7:00pm, going till 9:30pm, with our trusty and capable DJ, Sandra Gladney, spinning everyones favorite, from Waltz, FT, Tango,Swing, Rumba, Cha Cha, VW, Quick Step, and of course in keeping with our theme, plenty of Merenge and Salsa.
The 'Waltz Mixer", always enjoyable, and giving everyone an opportunity to dance. Sandra, your choice in music is excellent, the "Waltz Mixer" proves it. Thanks for your dedication and making our dancing pleasure more pleasurable.
Looking ahead: July 12th lesson at 6:00pm will be NC 2 Step, with Robert Phaigh in the "driver's seat", teaching as only Robert Phaigh can teach, NC 2 Step. Be ready for the best lesson you will ever get in this much loved dance, NC 2 Step. (Robt Phaigh is the husband of "our charming Laura Taylor).
Our dances are held each month, second Sunday at The Veterans Memorial Bldg, 1626 Willamette St. Lesson at 6:00pm. Social dancing commences at 7:00pm and goes to 9:30pm. Plenty of bottled water on hand, thanks to Larry!
Prices: $5 members, $8 non-members. All inclusive. Clean environment, no smoking, no alcohol.
